So, what if you want a car that offers more than a Golf GTI, but maybe not quite as much as the four-wheel drive Golf R? Well, you’re in luck – say hello to the new Golf GTI TCR concept. Yes, I’m afraid it’s a concept for the time being. Having said that, VW has confirmed that it’s looking to make this concept a reality and the factory robots are primed to get work towards the end of the year.

Fastest GTI In The Range

Powering this concept is the same 2.0 litre turbocharged petrol used in the Clubsport, only it isn’t. Well, it’s the same engine, only ze Germans have squeezed a bit more power out of it. Instead of 261bhp, the TCR is able to pump out 286bhp along with 370Nm of torque. This power is fed to a 7-speed DSG automatic gearbox with power fed to the front wheels via a locking differential for better grip.

A 0-62 time has not been released by VAG just yet, but thankfully the top speed has. With the limiter on it’ll hit a very Germanic 155mph, but remove it and you’ll be able to continue to a top speed of 165mph. Not only is this rather impressive, but it also makes it the fastest Golf GTI to be made.

Not Your Usual Golf GTI

At first glance, you’ll be fooled in to thinking that this is just a boggo GTI that has had some stickers applied to the side. Granted, the changes aren’t drastic, but Golfs have always about being tasteful and classy, rather than bonkers and in-your-face look of the Civic Type R. The TCR Concept sits on 18-inch “Belvedere” forged wheels, but 19″ alloys will be available on request.

That’s my kind of interior

You won’t be able to see them, but the TCR also has two extra radiators to help provide better cooling for when you’re really pushing the car. Let’s head back to the bits you can see though – the front bumper design has been tweaked, as has the front splitter. There are also TCR logos on the sills and you’ll find an interior that is different to that of what you’ll find in the Golf GTI.

What do you think of the TCR? Would you have this or the R?
