Private number plates used to be frowned upon, but public perception of them has been mostly positive for the last decade or so. People who hate personalized license plates the most are usually just misinformed. The truth of the matter is that we have more private numbers currently on cars in the UK than ever before. So, with that statistic, there’s got to be a reason why people love them so much, right? Well, here are a couple of facts regarding private numbers you might not have known about, as well as some myths which we feel need to be debunked.

  1. They’re not that expensive

Although there are lots of private number plates which still cost thousands of pounds, the cheapest options go for well under a few hundred pounds including fees at sites like CarReg.co.uk! Since lots of companies offer 0% finance, you might see how getting a private number plate nowadays is much easier (and cheaper) than it used to be. Apart from that £15 million F1 plate, most normal personalized plates don’t have to cost a small fortune to look great.

  1. They’re a great way to personalise your vehicle

Most people personalize their vehicle one way or another, whether it’s a sticker, aftermarket wheels, an exhaust system, or something else entirely different. When you consider how expensive some of those mods can get, suddenly purchasing a £150 personalized plate which makes your vehicle completely unique doesn’t seem that expensive does it? Plus, a plate will never impact your car or SUV’s driving comfort or style like wheels or aftermarket springs might. And, it’s 100% LEGAL!

  1. You can keep them for life

Did you know you can keep your signature plate for life and swap it from vehicle to vehicle? The average road user changes their vehicle once every 4 years (roughly), and that figure is constantly going down thanks to great leasing deals. Since the DVLA makes transferring private number plates from one car to another so easy, why would you not want to get one plate and keep it for life? It makes sense, doesn’t it?

  1. They make for awesome birthday presents

Don’t know what to get your significant other for his birthday? Why not a personalized license plate? What says I value and respect you more than something which is completely unique to them and no one else has? Celebrating special occasions like a 21st or 30th birthday are an excellent opportunity to get them a private number plate which will spell out their initials. Registering a number plate as a gift is exactly the same as registering one for yourself. And, since registrations are valid for 10 years, they can constantly transfer their plate to a new car should they ever switch vehicles.

  1. I have one. It consists of my First initial, my date of birth and the First initials of my sister, my mother and my late father. I chose it because I thought it was a nice touch and as far as I’m concerned, family is very important. I like it and I don’t give a damn what anyone else thinks. Those that belittle them, like the hack Bill Coles I don’t waste any time thinking about. They not even worth the dirt I scrape off my work boots!!
